Donna Aldridge was photographed as she was checking in with her 39" x 27" oil painting Roses Spilling Over the Trellis-Arch at the Third Annual Plein Air Event show & auction June 14, 2003, sponsored by the Johnson County Parks and Rec's 50Plus, the MidAmerica Pastel Society and the Greater Kansas City Art Association.
The plein-air painting portion of this year's event was held June 7th to June 13th at River Market, Shawnee Mission Park and Loose Park. Donna's peice was painted on site over three days at the Rose Garden in Loose Park. It was so fun to see the whole garden filled with painters that Wednesday morning!
The purpose of this event is to give the Kansas City community an opportunity to observe and visit with artists as they work on landscape paintings on site. Painters worked in many media including oil, pastel, watercolor, acrylic.
Painting outdoors on scene is exciting, though more difficult in several ways that working in the comfort of the studio. Aside from hauling equipment, dealing with heat or cold, unexpected weather changes, constantly moving light, 'varmits' and other adventures, there is no way better to capture the richest aspects of the color and textures of the landscape!
